70th Birthday Video Messages Without an App: A Guide for Older Guests
A 70th birthday often brings several generations together in one room. Some guests film everything. Others have never sent a video from a phone. Both can take part, because nothing needs to be installed.
This guide explains how guests reach the page, what they can send, and how you can make it easy for the older guests on your list.
How guests reach the page
Guests open one link or scan one QR code with their phone. The page opens in the browser they already use. There is no app to download and no account to create, which removes the step that stops many older guests: passwords, app stores and sign-up forms.
The link is the main way to reach guests. Send it by text message, WhatsApp or email, ideally a few days before the party, so nobody discovers it for the first time in a noisy room. The QR code is meant for printing on signs and table cards, placed in several spots at the venue. Put one near the seats where older relatives will sit, not only by the entrance.
The only thing a guest must give is a first name. Then they choose what to send.
What an older guest can send
There are three ways to take part, and each one is complete on its own:
- A video message. Up to 3 videos per phone, each lasting 1 minute at most. The guest films with the phone camera or picks a video already on the phone. See how video messages work.
- Photos. A picture from an old trip, a family gathering or a holiday from years ago. These go into the photo album, which is delivered to you as the host.
- A written message. A few lines for those who prefer not to be on camera.
Nobody has to do all three. A guest who dislikes cameras can send a photo with a short note, and that is a lovely gift.
Simple steps to share with older guests
A short note sent with the link helps more than a long explanation. You can copy these points:
- Tap the link, or point the phone camera at the QR code and tap the link that appears.
- Type your first name.
- Choose video, photo or written message.
- For a video, hold the phone sideways if that feels comfortable, and look at the lens rather than the screen.
- Speak as you would at the table. One minute is short, so one memory is enough.
A few practical habits also make a real difference on camera:
- Find good light. Sitting facing a window or a lamp keeps the face clear. Light behind the head turns the face into a shadow.
- Choose a quiet corner. Music and conversation can cover a soft voice. A hallway or a spot outside works well during the party.
- Steady the phone. Resting the elbows on a table, or asking a grandchild to hold the phone, avoids a shaky picture.
- Wipe the lens. A quick wipe with a soft cloth gives a sharper image.
- Keep reading glasses close. They help with typing the first name and choosing the right button.
If a guest is unsure, offer to sit with them for a moment. People often feel more confident once the first message is sent. Since each guest can send up to 3 videos, a first try does not have to be perfect.
What to say in one minute
Older guests often worry about what to say. Give them a simple frame:
- Say who you are to the birthday person.
- Share one memory; a small one is best.
- Add a wish for the years ahead.
For example: "We met at your first job, and you lent me your coat on my first winter in town. Happy 70th. I hope the next chapter brings you as much warmth as you gave me."
For a 70th, a memory from decades ago often means more than a general compliment. Photos work the same way: an old picture with one sentence of explanation can carry a whole story. Suggest that guests look through their albums before the party and take a photo of the prints they want to share.
Timing, reminders and guests far away
Guests send during the party and for a few days after. That suits those who need a quiet moment at home to record, or who felt shy in front of a crowd. It also helps relatives who cannot travel: they use the same link from their own living room.
You choose when the collection closes, and you can send guests a reminder. A gentle reminder after the party is often the nudge an older guest needs. Keep in mind that the later the collection closes, the later the first film arrives.
What you receive
You get four things, all at the same level: the video messages, the photo album, the written messages (also as a PDF book, digital only), and the films. The first film is an automatic film of the video messages, ready within 24 hours after the collection closes. The second is a personalized film that can mix videos, photos and written messages, where you choose content, order, mood, music, color look, transitions and the opening and closing text. See how the films come together.
You also keep every video message on its own and every guest photo in the album.
If you want guests to see pictures during the party, the live slideshow shows photos only on a screen, and you can moderate them. The guest gallery stays closed unless you open it, and you decide what it shows.
Everything stays available for 3 months after the first film is delivered, which protects your guests' privacy. Download the films, photos and messages to keep them forever.
Ready to set it up
One event costs $49, and a pack of 3 events costs $99. You can try the guest experience yourself first on the demo, which is a good way to check how clear the steps feel before you explain them to older guests. When you are ready, visit the shop to create the page for the 70th.
