A tenth or a fortieth gathers people who were at the wedding and people who were not yet born. Asking both groups the same question produces a film that spans the whole marriage.
Graduations and qualifications
Finishing medical school, passing the bar, qualifying after years of evening classes. These are usually marked with a dinner and a photograph, and the people who supported it never get asked to say anything.
Reunions and farewells
Someone emigrating, a team disbanding, a house being sold. The defining feature is that this specific group will not be in one room again, which is exactly when a written card is not enough.

Which occasions this is actually worth doing for
The test that matters
Not every gathering needs one of these, and it is worth being honest about which do. The question is not how important the occasion is. It is whether this particular group of people will be in one room again.
A weekly dinner does not qualify. A leaving party, a fortieth anniversary, a graduation, a reunion, someone emigrating, a team disbanding — these do, because the specific combination of people is temporary and everybody in the room quietly knows it.
The occasions people forget to mark
Weddings and funerals are obvious. The ones that go unmarked tend to be the achievements that took the longest: qualifying as a doctor after a decade of study, finishing a degree at fifty, becoming a citizen, ending treatment.
We have seen films made for a medical appointment and for a tenth wedding anniversary, and in both cases the surprise was how much the contributors had wanted an occasion to say something and had never been given one.
One question, chosen carefully
Whatever the occasion, the single biggest factor in the quality of the film is the question written next to the code. With no prompt people say congratulations. With a prompt they tell a story.
For an anniversary: “what do you remember about them from back then?” For a graduation: “what did it take to get here that nobody saw?” For a farewell: “what will you miss?” Write it yourself, in your own words, and make it specific to the person.
When there is no party at all
Nothing here requires a venue. Plenty of collections are run entirely through a group chat over a fortnight, then delivered as a surprise.
That works well for occasions people are reluctant to celebrate publicly, or where the person is far away, or where the whole point is that they did not expect anything.
What this is not
This is not a videographer. Nobody is filming your event, and the finished film is made of messages people recorded on their own phones, not coverage of the day.
If what you want is footage of the occasion itself, hire someone. If what you want is what people had to say about it, that is a different thing, and it is the thing that tends to be missing afterwards.

Set up your space about a week before — name the occasion, choose your music, and print your QR code.
Spread the QR code as widely as you can
- ✓Place the QR code on the tables and at the entrance.
- ✓Drop the link in the group chat before the day.
- ✓Send the QR code and link to your guest list through WhatsApp, SMS, or your group chat so anyone who can’t attend in person can still record.
- ✓Ask the host to remind everyone to record a message.
Put it on your signage and send it privately to your guest list — WhatsApp, group chats, SMS — so even the people who can’t be there in person add their video.

What kinds of events does this work for?
Anniversaries, graduations, reunions, farewells, retirements, citizenship celebrations, end-of-treatment parties, house moves. The useful test is whether this specific group of people will be together again — if not, it is worth doing.
What should we ask people to say?
Write one specific question and put it next to the code. “What will you miss?” or “what do you remember about them from back then?” gets a story; no prompt at all gets forty people saying congratulations.
Can people join from far away?
Yes. Share the link and they can record from anywhere. Their message appears in the film alongside everyone who attended.
Can we do this without an event?

Is someone going to film our event?
No. This is not a videography service. Guests record their own messages on their own phones, and you receive those edited into one film. If you want footage of the occasion itself, you need a videographer as well.

What language is it in?
The recording page, your dashboard and the wording in your film are in English. Your guests can speak whatever language they like — nothing is transcribed or translated, so their message appears exactly as they recorded it.
